NFL owners voted Wednesday to award the 2027 Super Bowl to Los Angeles and SoFi Stadium, the home of the Rams and Chargers, commissioner Roger Goodell announced.

“We are very excited to bring the Super Bowl back to Los Angeles for the second time in five years,” Goodell said in a statement, per ESPN. “The city did an outstanding job hosting Super Bowl LVI in the incredible SoFi Stadium, and we believe that Super Bowl LXI will be even more memorable.”

It will be the second time SoFi Stadium has hosted the Super Bowl since opening in 2020. The $5-billion venue was home to the Rams’ triumph over the Cincinnati Bengals in February 2022.

The 2027 Super Bowl will coincide with the 60th anniversary of Super Bowl I at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1967.

L.A. will host a remarkable three-year sporting stretch, with the city serving as one of the homes of the 2026 World Cup before hosting the Olympic Games in summer 2028.

Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium and Tennessee’s new stadium, which is set to open in 2027, were rumored to be other contenders for the 2027 Super Bowl.

Super Bowl LVIII will be held in Las Vegas on Feb. 11, while New Orleans will host the big game in 2025, followed by San Francisco in 2026.

WrestleMania 37, 38 & 39’s locations and dates have all been revealed by WWE.

During a creative (if surreal) promotional video, Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, Roman Reigns, Sasha Banks, and John Cena all helped announce the news regrading where and when the next three ‘Manias will be going down.

This year’s ‘Mania 37 has been moved from the original date of March 28 and is set to be yet another two-night affair, airing on April 10 & 11, with WWE seemingly doubling down on last year’s pirate-themed Show of Shows. Also, the comapny will finally be bringing their showpiece event to Tampa, Florida’s Raymond James Stadium after pulling the show due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

WrestleMania 38 will then arrive in Arlington, Texas’ AT&T Stadium on April 3, 2022. This stadium is obviously famous for being the location where WWE reportedly broke their attendance record at WrestleMania 32, with a whopping 101,000 fans in attendance.

And finally, ‘Mania 39 will take place inside of Los Angels’ SoFi Stadium on April 2, 2023. As you’ll likely remember, this ‘WrestleMania Goes Hollywood’ event was initially set to go down at ‘Mania 37. However, it’s clear that those plans have been seriously effected by the current global situation and WWE’s reaction to it.

On top of all this, it appears that the company will be trying to reintroduce fans to their arenas at this year’s event, with WWE’s official press release on the news stating that they “will announce ticket availability and safety protocols for WrestleMania 37 in the coming weeks.”

For now, though, let’s all just celebrate the fact that we won’t have to endure 9 hours of ‘Mania content in one single sitting…in 2021, at least.

Malcolm Brown rushed for a career-high 79 yards and two touchdowns, Jared Goff passed for 275 yards and the Los Angeles Rams opened SoFi Stadium with a 20-17 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night.

Robert Woods had six catches for 105 yards to help the Rams improve to 4-0 in season openers under coach Sean McVay and spoiled the debut of Mike McCarthy, Dallas’ first new head coach in a decade.

Ezekiel Elliott rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown and caught another scoring pass, but the Cowboys began a season of high expectations by losing three starters to injury in the first half and then failing to mount a late comeback in a scoreless fourth quarter for both teams.

Dak Prescott passed for 266 yards and a touchdown, but Dallas managed three points on its six drives in the second half. Michael Gallup made a long catch that would have put Dallas in field goal range with 21 seconds left, but was called for offensive pass interference for contact with Jalen Ramsey.

The opening of Rams owner Stan Kroenke’s $5 billion stadium project was a historic night for the Los Angeles area, albeit one that should have been much more festive. The coronavirus pandemic prevented Rams fans from christening the palatial stadium, which is scheduled to host next season’s Super Bowl, the 2023 college football championship game and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The Rams got the ball first in their new home, and Goff hit Woods with a short pass that turned into a 20-yard gain on the building’s first play from scrimmage. The 75-yard opening drive ended with Brown’s 1-yard plunge for the stadium’s first touchdown.

Elliott tied it early in the second quarter with a 19-yard TD catch during which he ran through most of the Los Angeles defense.

Three Rams drives stalled for field goal attempts, and Elliott put the Cowboys ahead at halftime with a 1-yard TD run.

Brown also scored on the Rams’ opening drive of the second half. They never scored again, but it was enough.

McCarthy curiously went for it on fourth and 3 from the Los Angeles 11 with about 12 minutes to play, but Rams safety Jordan Fuller made a superb tackle on fellow rookie CeeDee Lamb before the marker.

DEBUTS

Lamb had five catches for 59 yards.

Van Jefferson’s first career reception was a beautiful 31-yard grab in the second quarter, but it was the promising Rams rookie’s only reception.

Cam Akers rushed for 39 yards on 14 carries in the Rams second-round pick’s NFL debut.

Rookie kicker Samuel Sloman put his first career field goal attempt off the left upright from 29 yards out, but he recovered to hit two field goals for the Rams.

INJURIES

The Cowboys lost starting linebacker Leighton Vander Esch to a collarbone injury in the first quarter. Right tackle Cam Erving and tight end Blake Jarwin both didn’t return from knee injuries in the second quarter.

Rams tight end Gerald Everett injured his back in the second half.

The Los Angeles Rams cautioned season-ticket members Tuesday that fans could be excluded from the debut season of SoFi Stadium due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to ESPN’s Lindsey Thiry.

At most, the Rams would allow 15,000 fans to attend home games, provided they wear masks. The venue contains a capacity of 70,000.

SoFi Stadium, which was financed for $5.5 billion by Rams owner Stan Kroenke, was expected to open with great fanfare. The Las Vegas Raiders are in a similar predicament, though Allegiant Stadium cost $1.8 billion, paling in comparison to the venue in Inglewood, California.

With the preseason expected to be slashed, the first NFL game in SoFi Stadium history figures to take place in Week 1 of the regular season, when the Rams host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football.

The Los Angeles Chargers are co-tenants with the Rams after spending the last three years at Dignity Health Sports Park, a small stadium built for the MLS’ Los Angeles Galaxy.

An ironworker died after falling from the roof of SoFi Stadium on Friday and work at the construction site has temporarily stopped, a spokesperson for the contractor confirmed, according to ESPN’s Lindsey Thiry.

A source said the worker fell at least 60 feet while working on the southeast corner of the roof, according to Nathan Fenno of the Los Angeles Times.

“This is an extremely sad day,” the site’s general contractor, Turner-AECOM Hunt, said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues at this extremely difficult time. We work extremely hard to prevent days like this and we have halted all construction activity.”

There’s also a coronavirus outbreak at the construction site. Seven workers tested positive in the last eight days, bringing the total number of known cases among workers at the stadium to 12, according to Fenno.

Construction on SoFi Stadium, located in Inglewood, California, started in November 2016. The project is currently estimated to cost $5 billion-$6 billion after being initially tagged at $2.6 billion. The arena will be the new home of the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers.

A preseason game between the Rams and the New Orleans Saints on Aug. 14 is scheduled to be the first event at SoFi Stadium.

WrestleMania 37 is scheduled to take place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California on March 28, 2021, but as noted earlier this week that may not happen, either due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic or the potential SoFi Stadium construction delay.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti confirmed on Wednesday the city may not authorize large events for one year, which would be well into 2021.

“It’s difficult to imagine us getting together in the thousands anytime soon,” said Garcetti at a coronavirus briefing. “We’ve got many, many miles to walk before we’re going to be back in those environments. … Large gatherings — such as concerts and sporting events — may not be approved in the city for at least one year.”

SoFi Stadium also announced the Grand Opening for July 25 and 26 was pushed back to a “future date in 2021.”

WrestleVotes reported earlier today WWE has already begun researching a “plan b” for an alternative venue to host WrestleMania 37 in case WWE is not able to put on the show in California. The report noted it’s too early to speculate on exact locations or details.

This year’s WrestleMania 36 was moved from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida to the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, taking place over two nights. Earlier this month it was reported Tampa is being considered again for WrestleMania 38 in 2022.

WWE have confirmed – following months of heavy speculation – that 2021’s WrestleMania will be hosted in Los Angeles.

The city’s mayor Eric Garcetti, alongside his Inglewood counterpart James T. Butts Jr., this morning announced that the unofficially titled WrestleMania 37 will emanate from SoFi Stadium on Sunday, 28 March.

The brand new $5 billion venue had been openly courting a big event as preparation for hosting the SuperBowl in 2022, with WWE’s biggest show of the year touted as a potential candidate.

“Many people are more excited about us hosting WrestleMania than the Olympics,” Butts told the assembled press. He went on: “WrestleMania brings excitement and is followed by almost every age demographic. With the scheduling of this marquee event, we can say without contradiction, the only thing that has changed in Inglewood is… everything.”

Although precise details on the exact configuration are obviously not confirmed, SoFi Stadium’s 70,240 base capacity can be expanded to 100,240 for an event of this type. Come next March, we can reasonably expect WWE to announce a record attendance eclipsing the disputed 101,763 figure set in Arlington’s AT&T Stadium for WrestleMania 32.

In addition to the announcement, WWE dropped a logo for the forthcoming event, an aureate effort which pretends it is taking place in Hollywood. It’s rather splendid.
