The main event of ROH Supercard of Honor 2024 was an emotional one for everyone involved. On April 5, 2013, the late Jay Briscoe defeated Kevin Steen (now known as Kevin Owens in WWE) at Supercard of Honor VII to win the ROH World Championship for the first time in his career. Fast forward 11 years later, Jay’s little brother Mark, a man who has came close to winning the ROH World Championship on multiple occasions in the past, got his chance to dethrone the Mad King himself, Eddie Kingston.

Since defeating Claudio Castagnoli in September 2023, Kingston has done a lot with the ROH World Championship. He made it part of the now separated Continental Crown, he defended it nearly a dozen times against opponents from all over the world, and knew the meaning behind the date he was wrestling Briscoe on. To add to the big match feel, Briscoe walked out to his old entrance music, “Gimme Back My Bullets” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and was willing to put himself through hell in order to achieve the same destiny his late brother achieved 11 years earlier. Battered, bruised, and donning the crimson mask, Briscoe hit the ‘Jay Driller,’ his brother’s old finisher, to keep Kingston down for the three count and became the new ROH World Champion.

After the match, Briscoe was showered with streamers from the fans, and was congratulated by his family, who rushed the ring to put the new champion on their shoulders. The locker room also emptied and came to the ring to join in the celebrations, with stars like Jay Lethal and Matt Taven being unable to keep themselves from shedding a few tears. While Briscoe and Kingston went to war over the ROH World Championship at Supercard of Honor, they will soon be joining forces, as they are set to team up with Adam Copeland at AEW Dynasty to take on the House of Black on April 21.

While he found himself eliminated earlier than he hoped in the tournament, Mark Briscoe’s run in the AEW Continental Classic was nowhere near a failure, as he proved himself against the likes of Jon Moxley and Jay White, while also picking up a win in his final match against Jay Lethal. And now that the dust has settled, Briscoe is ready to set his sights on some other gold, most notably a belt that finds itself in a bit of turmoil right now.

During a “K&S Wrestle Fest” virtual signing, Briscoe received a message from a fan who wants to see Briscoe go after the TNT Championship. It took less than Briscoe five seconds to warm up to the idea.

“I like that, I like that,” Briscoe said. “I’m getting a little tingle here [thinking about it]. I like that.”

A TNT Championship victory would be a historic one for Briscoe, who hasn’t held a singles championship since 2002, when he was JCW Light Heavyweight Champion, and has never held a singles title in a major promotion like AEW or Ring of Honor. He notably was a contender for the ROH Television Championship in 2023, unsuccessfully challenging Samoa Joe for the title at ROH Supercard of Honor last April.

Briscoe throwing his name into the TNT Title picture would come after the title experienced a wild Saturday night at AEW Worlds End. The title entered the night on the shoulders of Christian Cage, who promptly lost it to Adam Copeland following a brutal No Disqualification match. However, Christian immediately regained the title in the post-match, after Killswitch gave Christian his guaranteed “any time, anywhere” TNT Title shot he won earlier in the night during a battle royal on Worlds End: Zero Hour.

Ring of Honor’s upcoming pay-per-view, Death Before Dishonor looks to be shaping up to be a big one, and only one match has been announced yet. ROH World Champion Claudio Castagnoli will be defending his title against Mark Briscoe.

The challenge was made, and accepted, during a backstage segment on Thursday’s “ROH on HonorClub.” Briscoe was at least partially motivated by a video message sent from Eddie Kingston just after he defeated KENTA to win the NJPW Strong Openweight Championship. Kingston will not be able to appear at Death Before Dishonor due to him being part of New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s G1 Climax tournament, but he urged Briscoe to challenge Castagnoli in his stead.

“These people need you not to just go after the Ring of Honor Championship,” Kingston said. “We need you to win that championship. We need you to have that Briscoe legacy live on.”

Mark’s late brother, Jay Briscoe, was a two-time ROH World Champion. However, the title eluded Mark and he challenged for it on only a handful of occasions. The last time he had a shot at the ROH World Title was in September 2013 at ROH A New Dawn, where he challenged then-champion Adam Cole.

Castagnoli’s second and current reign as the ROH World Champion began after he defeated Chris Jericho at Final Battle in October 2022. His last title defense was against Komander on the June 30 episode of “AEW Rampage.”

Death Before Dishonor is slated for Friday, July 21 at the CURE Insurance Arena in Trenton, New Jersey. ROH’s last pay-per-view was back in March at Supercard of Honor. On that night Castagnoli successfully defended his championship against Eddie Kingston.
