Steve Maclin appeared primed for a lengthy reign as Impact World Champion following his victory over Kushida at Rebellion, not to mention his dominant title defenses against Rhino and PCO. But Maclin’s title reign lasted all of 54 days, and on Friday night’s Against All Odds show, Impact Wrestling crowned a new champion: veteran tag team wrestler Alex Shelley, who has been with the company on and off since 2004, but had never won its top prize.

The match was built around Shelley targeting Maclin’s vulnerable left arm, attacking the body part from the onset, and eventually softening up the bigger and stronger Maclin with a series of kicks. As the match progressed, Shelley displayed his submission skills, but then picked up the pace, nailing Maclin with some of his signature high-flying offense. Eventually, Maclin scripted his own demise by ripping off a turnbuckle pad, inadvertently allowing Shelley to gain the advantage by sending Maclin face-first to the exposed steel before connecting with the Shell Shock for the pinfall victory.

After the match, Shelley and his longtime tag team partner, Chris Sabin, celebrated in the ring together as the loyal Impact Wrestling fanbase gave them a rousing ovation. Sabin won the X-Division Championship for a record-breaking ninth time earlier in the night, defeating Trey Miguel in a hard-fought match. As such, Against All Odds proved to be a memorable night in the celebrated careers of the Motor City Machine Guns.

Shelley probably won’t have to wait too long for his first title challenger — on the same show, Nick Aldis defeated Bully Ray, Jonathan Gresham, and Heath in an 8-4-1 match to become the #1 contender for the Impact World Championship. Impact has yet to announce the date for the inevitable Shelley vs. Aldis title match.

For the first time in his career, Steve Maclin is the Impact World Champion following his win over KUSHIDA at Sunday’s Impact Rebellion.

KUSHIDA kicked out of a Maclin KIA and when Maclin went to the top rope, he got caught in a Hoverboard Lock as a counter. Maclin fought out of it, but KUSHIDA was relentless in re-applying it, even when Maclin broke out of it by driving KUSHIDA into the corner. Maclin finally hit another KIA as a counter to get the pin and win.

Afterward, Maclin insisted Impact president Scott D’Amore hand him the title as he said he would. D’Amore did, but Maclin insisted he put it around his waist. D’Amore eventually slapped it on his shoulder forcefully and Maclin laid him out when he turned around.

Former TNA World Champion Nick Aldis then got in the ring to confront Maclin before the new champion backed away.

Josh Alexander is the longest-reigning Impact World Champion in the company’s 20-plus year history, but thanks to an injury, it’s over. An official press release was sent out by Impact detailing the unfortunate news that “The Walking Weapon” has suffered a torn triceps, ending his reign at just under a year. Alexander won the title back at Rebellion on April 23, 2022.

“We wish Josh a full and speedy recovery, and everyone at IMPACT Wrestling, including our loyal fans, can’t wait to see him back in the ring,” said new Impact Wrestling president Scott D’Amore.

Alexander was set for several big Impact matches coming up, including tonight’s Sacrifice event where he was set to tag with Frankie Kazarian and Rich Swann against Time Machine (Alex Shelley, Chris Sabin and KUSHIDA). He will now be replaced by Steve Maclin. Alexander was also scheduled to defend his world title against KUSHIDA on WrestleMania weekend at the Impact/NJPW crossover event Multiverse United in downtown Los Angeles. Now, KUSHIDA will face Steve Maclin to determine a new champion at Rebellion.

Alexander joins Impact Knockouts Champion Mickie James on the untimely injury list after it was revealed on Thursday that she too would be off of Sacrifice due to injury. James was set to defend her gold against Jordynne Grace at the show, and the status of that title is now up in the air, with its future likely to be decided at Sacrifice. Before winning the title, James was on her “Last Rodeo” tour, where if she lost a match, she would be forced to retire.

Josh Alexander won the Impact World Championship against Christian Cage at tonight’s Impact Wrestling Bound for Glory.

Alexander was able to beat Christian with the ankle lock to win the title. Afterwards, Christian handed off the title, hugged Alexander and headed to the back. Alexander’s wife and son watched from the front row and made their way into the ring to celebrate.

Moose — who had won the Call Your Shot Gauntlet Match earlier in the night — cashed in his title opportunity. Alexander moved his family out of the way only to take a spear from Moose and promptly lose the title.

While speaking on Dynamite Download, Brian Cage explained that he was going to turn heel if he would have stayed with Impact Wrestling.

Cage revealed that he would have had a rivalry with then Impact Wrestling World Champion Tessa Blanchard. (h/t Fightful for the transcription).

“I enjoy being a face more,” admitted Cage. “If I had stayed with IMPACT instead of going to AEW, I was going to turn heel and that would have been my perfect heel character because I was going to come out and celebrate with Tessa, and then I was going to take her head off. That was going to be a feud with Tessa, I would get my win back and the title from her. I’ve never been able to be this heel. Every time I’ve been a heel, it’s always to be the strong, silent, meathead, high school bully kind of heel, which I can’t stand.

I fit the role, obviously, but it’s so stereotypical and vanilla to me. There aren’t different things you can do with it. I enjoy being a face because I like the excitement, intensity, and I can do more of my flashy moves. I’m not one who always buys into, ‘you can’t do that move because you’re heel.’”

Brian Cage left Impact Wrestling after the Hard To Kill 2020 pay-per-view and then signed with AEW on  January 12, 2020.

Former TNA President Dixie Carter took to Twitter to comment on Christian Cage winning the Impact World Championship.

As noted, Christian defeated Kenny Omega to become the new champion on Friday’s AEW Rampage.

Dixie tweeted how she was very happy and praised AEW for allowing “these types of matches.”

Her full tweet was the following: “This makes me very happy. I will never forget how special it was when @Christian4Peeps 1st became @IMPACTWRESTLING World Champ. I always hated losing him to @wwe. Welcome home Christian & massive props to @AEW for allowing these types of matches to happen. #makingwrestlingfunagain”

As reported, Christian will defend the Impact title against Brian Myers at Impact’s Emergence on August 20. He is also scheduled to appear on next Thursday’s Impact TV show.

Christian Cage won the Impact World Championship against Kenny Omega on tonight’s AEW Rampage. In the opener of tonight’s debut episode, Christian picked up the pinfall victory on Omega. Near the end of the match, Don Callis attempted to distract the referee while The Young Bucks slid a chair into the ring.

Omega attempted to hit one winged angel on the chair, Christian reversed into his finisher, kill shot, and got the win. Post-match, Jungle Boy, Luchasaurus, and Impact Wrestling EVP Scott D’Amore celebrated with Christian.

Going into this match, Cage was the undefeated, number one ranked wrestler to Omega. Cage first signed with AEW back in March.

AEW’s second weekly TNT show, Rampage, debuts this Friday night (13 August) – and the promotion has loaded its inaugural card up with a trio of title matches.

Kenny Omega will defend his IMPACT World Championship against Christian Cage in the night’s opener. This was announced on last night’s episode of Dynamite, with Christian confirming the bout after Kenny confirmed the duo will contest the AEW belt at All Out on 5 September.

Omega vs. Cage will open the show. It’ll be the first time Christian has wrestled for IMPACT/TNA’s top belt since April 2007, when he defended the NWA World Heavyweight Title against Samoa Joe on a Northeast Wrestling show.

Already announced prior to last night was Red Velvet vs. AEW Women’s World Champion Britt Baker. The champ got a tremendous reception in her Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania hometown on Dynamite and will be received like a hero again on Rampage, where Velvet will play heel after jumping Britt last night.

Finally, Miro will defend the TNT Championship against the “unsigned” Fuego Del Sol, who will be granted an AEW contract if he wins. The challenger has risen in prominence and popularity as a sentimental fan favourite on Dark and Dark: Elevation in recent weeks.

AEW and Impact Wrestling officials reportedly mapped out plans for Kenny Omega’s Impact World Title run before he won the title from Rich Swann back at the Rebellion pay-per-view in late April.

There’s no word yet on when Omega will drop the Impact World Title, but it was noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that the two companies collaborated on plans for the title reign, and that their “battle plan” was mapped out before the title change.

It was said that officials decided on what the title reign would consist of, which AEW and Impact wrestlers would be appearing on what shows, and when Impact can get their World Title back. These factors were said to be a part of the deal way ahead of time.

It remains to be seen if the working relationship between AEW and Impact will continue once Omega drops the title.

Omega has defended the Impact World Title just once since winning it from Swann. He retained over Moose at Impact’s Against All Odds on June 12. His next title defense will come against Sami Callihan on July 17 at the Slammiversary pay-per-view.

Omega’s next AEW World Title defense will come this Saturday night on Dynamite as he defends against Jungle Boy. He is also scheduled to defend his AAA Mega Title against Andrade El Idolo on August 14 at AAA’s Triplemania XXIX event.

After having his job reinstated on tonight’s episode of Impact Wrestling, Sami Callihan will now officially challenge Kenny Omega for the Impact World Championship at Slammiversary on Saturday, July 17.

Towards the end of tonight’s program, the representative of Anthem Sports & Entertainment, the multinational media company that acquires Impact Wrestling, asked wrestling legend Tommy Dreamer to represent them on their behalf. When Dreamer came out, he informed Executive Vice Presidents Scott D’Amore and Don Callis that Anthem has reinstated Callihan’s position with the company. But tempers exploded when Dreamer then delivered the bad news that Callis’ job as EVP was terminated.

Furious by Anthem’s decision, Callis headed to the back and ran right into Callihan. Callihan – with a vicious smile on his face – promised Callis that come July 17, he was going to “bash Kenny Omega’s brains in” and make Callis watch in horror.

Last Saturday at Against All Odds, Callis fired Callihan, who appeared at Daily’s Place following Moose and Omega’s main event title match. Concerned Callihan was going to hurt Omega and The Young Bucks, Callis immediately rushed down near the ring and ousted Callihan from his position on Impact. Now that he’s reinstated, all bets are on for Callihan to possibly reclaim his former title.

Callihan is a former Impact World Champion. He won it from Brian Cage on October 25, 2019. He held the title for 79 days before losing it to Tessa Blanchard, who became the first female in company history to carry the world title.

Speaking of Slammiversay, the Ultimate X will return next month, as Josh Alexander puts his X-Division Championship on the line against Trey Miguel, Ace Austin, Chris Bey, Rohit Raju, and Petey Williams. Also, Moose and Chris Sabin will square off in singles action after a violent confrontation on tonight’s show.

Below is the updated card for Slammiversary:

Impact World Championship:

Kenny Omega (c) vs. Sami Callihan

Ultimate X for the X-Division Championship:

Josh Alexander (c) vs. Trey Miguel vs. Ace Austin vs. Chris Bey vs. Rohit Raju vs. Petey Williams

Moose vs. Chris Sabin

Slammiversay will be available on FITE TV and traditional pay-per-view on Saturday, July 17.
