NHL: Chicago Blackhawks at Anaheim Ducks

The Anaheim Ducks locked up cornerstone defenseman Cam Fowler to an eight-year contract, the team announced Saturday.

The agreement comes with an average annual value of $6.5 million, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports.

Fowler, 25, was chosen 12th overall by the Ducks in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He tallied a career-high 11 goals, and finished one point shy of tying a career-best in points this past season, recording 39.

The smooth-skating blue-liner also logged a career-high 24:51 minutes per game this past season, a workload he can expect to increase in the coming years as he enters his prime.

Fowler was heading into the last season of a five-year, $20-million deal he signed in 2012. His new contract will kick in for the 2018-19 campaign, per Helene Elliott of the LA Times.
