With middleweight champion Michael Bisping apparently out of the picture, the plans for George St-Pierre’s comeback fight have changed.

GSP’s return to the Octagon later this year will take place at welterweight and he will face whoever holds that division’s title, UFC president Dana White recently told TSN.

“(St-Pierre) says he will fight whoever the 170-pound champion is when he comes back,” White said.

The news comes in the wake of an awkward situation in which St-Pierre and Bisping were announced to be fighting at an unscheduled date, with St-Pierre insisting he would not be able to compete until late 2017 and Bisping demanding that the match be made for the summer.

When St-Pierre refused to budge on the matter, White made the call to cancel the fight. St-Pierre has mentioned still wanting to fight Bisping in the future, but for now it seems that the 36-year-old is ready to return to the weight class that he once dominated.

St-Pierre owns a 25-2 professional record, including nine consecutive defenses of the UFC 170-lb belt. He took a break from fighting in November 2013 after winning a narrow split decision over Johny Hendricks, but has never committed fully to being retired.

Current welterweight champion Tyron Woodley has said that a bout with GSP is essential to building his own legacy.
