Cleveland Browns left tackle Joe Thomas provided a cautionary tale about the perils of professional football Thursday.

Thomas appeared on “In Depth With Graham Bensinger,” where he spoke candidly about Roger Goodell, the NFL’s inconsistent disciplinary process, and his own fight against brain injuries.

The 10-time Pro Bowler said he’s already experiencing memory loss, but isn’t sure whether to attribute it to his football career.

“I definitely expect memory loss,” Thomas said. “I’m already seeing memory loss, and maybe that’s just because of my old age, or maybe it’s football. It’s hard to tell, I mean there’s no double-blind studies when it comes to people’s lives.”

Thomas hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down and remains the NFL’s pre-eminent left tackle, earning his seventh first-team All-Pro selection in 2016. Nonetheless, Thomas’ concern about his memory loss is an indicator that significant work needs to be done by the NFL in terms of reducing the potential for severe brain injuries.
