NFL: Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions

Currently without a team after 11 seasons in the league, free-agent quarterback Jay Cutler is still contemplating retirement, a league source told ESPN’s Roman Modrowski.

Cutler had reportedly considered retirement as an option in February, before being released by the Chicago Bears.

The 34-year-old’s only reported scheduled free-agent visit was with the New York Jets, though it did not happen after the team signed Josh McCown.

Cutler had his 2016 season cut short by injuries to his thumb and labrum, playing in just five games. Cutler has missed at least one game every season since 2009 due to minor injuries.

He spent the last eight seasons with the Bears, setting a multitude of team passing records, though he did not make a single Pro Bowl and reached the playoffs only once.

Other than the Houston Texans, there are few – if any – ideal fits for Cutler. The play-caller presumably is not looking to join a team in a rebuilding phase and would prefer a situation where he could at least compete to be the starter.

Having earned over $110 million throughout his career, Cutler likely does not have financial motivation to take any job offered to him.
