Tony Romo has reached a verbal agreement to join CBS and is expected to replace Phil Simms as the network’s top color analyst, sources told John Ourand of

The deal hasn’t been signed, but CBS plans to make an official announcement Tuesday, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The reportedly recently retired quarterback will team up with Simms’ longtime partner, Jim Nantz, to form a new-look No. 1 team for CBS.

FOX were also in the running for Romo’s services, but were outbid by CBS, Ourand adds.

CBS’ top team covers both Thursday Night Football and the national Sunday night game. However, Romo – who has no booth experience – is reluctant to take on both responsibilities straight away, per Ourand.

He might not have a choice, however, as the NFL has made it clear to networks in the past that they must use their top broadcast teams for the likes of TNF.

ESPN first reported Romo’s decision to end his football career and move to TV on Tuesday, and it’s expected the Dallas Cowboys will release him soon.

However, it will be interesting to see if CBS’ deal with Romo will allow him to return to football if the opportunity arises. One NFL executive believes every NFL team now views the veteran pivot as the No. 1 option if a starter is hurt, and Romo would reportedly consider a return to Dallas if they needed him.
