It’s official – Gibby will stay in Toronto until at least 2019.The Toronto Blue Jays announced Saturday the signing of manager John Gibbons to a contract extension through the 2019 season, with a club option for 2020, according to Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi.

A reported agreement first surfaced more than a week ago, and it appears the sides were able to come to terms to keep the former big-league catcher north of the border for the foreseeable future.

“John and I have worked well together over the (last) year and we both feel very fortunate to have established trust and respect,” general manager Ross Atkins said back in March. “When you come into a new situation not having those established lines of communication, then going through a year we feel that not only was a successful one but a very productive one for the two of us (is a positive).

“So looking forward, we’re talking about the Blue Jays organization and not just the two of us leading it, but the two of us being a part of leading it together.”

This is Gibbons’ second stint with the Blue Jays. He first managed the club from 2004-08, and was re-hired in 2012.

During his tenure with the organization, the 54-year-old owns a combined 644-614 record, which includes two consecutive postseason appearances (2015, 2016) and a division title.
