Steve Smith isn’t planning on coming out of retirement anytime soon, but he’s picked out an ideal replacement for him as the Baltimore Ravens approach free agency.

Smith retired at the end of the 2016 season, although he caught a respectable 70 passes for 799 yards and five touchdowns.

The 37-year-old lobbied the Ravens to sign Brandon Marshall, who was recently released by the New York Jets.

“I think he would be a great fit because he’s a playmaker,” Smith said Friday. “At the end of the day, you need playmakers. You need a lot of horses in the stable and you can never have too many playmakers on one team or one side of the ball.”

Smith said he’s offering candid appraisals of potential targets to the Ravens’ personnel, noting that the team consulted with him last summer during free agency.

Marshall and Smith spoke last week, with the former Jets standout asking for a candid perspective about potentially playing for the Ravens.

“Actually, me and B. Marshall talked last week and he kind of gave me a heads up on some things,” Smith said. “I talked to a lot of other guys as well. When they ask about coming to Baltimore, a lot of guys call me and say, ‘Hey, what’s your perspective?'”

If Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome inks Marshall to a contract, Smith ought to receive some formal credit.
