Phil Jackson’s marquee offseason import was an expensive mistake.

New York Knicks center Joakim Noah, signed by Jackson to a four-year, $72-million contract last summer, will likely undergo arthroscopic knee surgery and miss the remainder of the season, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical.

The oft-injured center missed the last six games due to soreness in his hamstring. It’s unclear if the two injuries are related.

The Knicks showed tremendous faith in the former All-Star center. Noah only played in 29 games last season for the Chicago Bulls and was utterly ineffectual, but Jackson bet on a return to form for the 32-year-old.

That bet has not paid off. Noah holds averages of five points and 8.7 rebounds while shooting under 50 percent from both the field and the free-throw line. The former Defensive Player of the Year has also done little to improve the Knicks’ 25th-ranked defense.
