Tony Romo may have to settle for his second choice in 2017.

While Romo reportedly prefers to land with the Denver Broncos next season, the team is not inclined to trade for the veteran Dallas Cowboys quarterback, sources told NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport believes the Cowboys’ “No. 1 priority” is to trade Romo this offseason, but moving the veteran on his current deal will be difficult. Romo has a cap hit between $23.7 million and $25.2 million over the next three seasons.

That number is an issue for the Cowboys, who are projected to have negative cap space at the beginning of the official 2017 NFL year, according to spotrac.com.

The Broncos could still acquire Romo as a free agent if the Cowboys choose to release him, but that could present problems of its own – Romo also has a dead cap number of $19.6 million next season.

A possible win-win-win scenario for the Cowboys, Romo, and any potential suitor would be to trade the quarterback and have him sign a renegotiated deal with his new club.
